Event 97 : World Hypertension Day | Awareness & Screening Camp
With many accolades recognizing its work, NGO Tammana has always pushed itself farther to work hard towards creating a better society and environment for Women and Children, touching lives with compassion.
As a part of the Global Initiative MMM(May Measurement Month), NGO Tammana in its 97th Event, decided to organize a camp for creating awareness about hypertension (also known as High Blood Pressure) and screening the general public aged 18 plus, primarily students, on the occasion of World Hypertension Day, on 20th May 2018 at Punjab University (Hostel No. 4 and 5), Chandigarh.
May Measurement Month is an initiative led by the International Society of Hypertension (ISH) and endorsed by the World Hypertension League (WHL). It grew out of World Hypertension Day, which was launched by the WHL in 2005 to raise awareness around blood pressure worldwide.
May Measurement has expanded this into a global synchronized screening campaign and took place for the first time during May 2017. Over 100 countries took part in the inaugural year including India, and screened over 1.2 million people, making this the world’s largest public blood pressure screening programme.
High blood pressure is a silent killer. Around 10 Million lives are lost each year needlessly due to raised blood pressure. It is the No. 1 contributing risk factor for global death causing many cardiovascular complications. According to the PURE (Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological) study, only 46.5 % of people who have High BP actually know they have it, despite the fact that its detection is very simple.
The Founder Member of the NGO, Ms. Isha Kakaria shared that sedentary lifestyles, stressful jobs, emotional baggage and ignoring the importance of regular exercise, along with unhealthy eating habits contribute majorly to hypertensive problems in youth. That is the major reason our team decided to organize this camp in a hostel since students who are away from their homes keep a casual approach to health checkups. Team Tammana is very happy to be contributing its bit to this movement.
Another Member from the team and a hosteler, Kriti Thakur shared that it was important to aware youth about hypertension as their lifestyle includes improper and untimely eating, lots of time spent on electronic gadgets like smartphones, laptops etc and very minimal physical activity.
The HR Manager at Tammana, Ms. Monisha Sharma shared that the main motive of this event was to sensitize youth and people in general about hypertension.
After the screening by volunteer experts, those who were found hypertensive were provided with Dietary and lifestyle information at the camp. Refreshments were also given to the screenees.
Public Relation Executive of the NGO, Ms.Sana Sachdeva, and all other member Volunteers collectively thanked Dr. Aman Sukhija, Dr. Ritika, and Dr. Aparna Shrivastav to have volunteered their services for the cause.
Bani Singh, Member executive of the NGO explained how MMM is playing a crucial role in gathering data from around the world. She explained how Data collected from screenees, after their consent, would be anonymized and directly entered into the bespoke MMM App after BP measurements. Uploaded blood pressure records would be provided to the nominated MMM data analysts for further study.
The event was a success as many people turned up to get themselves checked and gather information about Hypertension.
